As an accountant I am fortunate enough to be able to work in any industry. I am surprised daily at how interesting it is to work in a company focused on developing technology-based solutions predominantly for the mining industry.

The development process - especially software - takes some time to get used to. Long term capacity planning is extremely difficult due to the fluid nature of projects and customer requirements. Hard numbers and deadlines are everything in accounting, so this fluidity can be hard to adjust to. Bugs pop up and demand attention: that can be the reality of a developer.

Luckily, I am surrounded by bright engineers who seek to make the product foolproof, immersed in a culture of thoroughness and tenacity. I sometimes wonder how that small box on the bench could possibly deliver such extensive functionality, but I have full faith in the engineers and developers in creating a quality product.

Once the solutions are delivered, I have the pleasure to work on calculating the ROIs for customers and seeing the benefits quantified. On this end of the process, I realise that what we do here is making a difference in an industry that’s doing it tough right now and needs as much assistance as it can get.

So I’m not just an accountant; I’m a technology accountant, and I’m part of a technology team making a difference in our industry.
